TBAN/Special Projects of National Significance
HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS)

With funding made available from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program in the amount of 1.3 million dollars, Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services is expanding services to persons with HIV/AIDS.

Expanded short-term and rental assistance programs!
  • Tenant-based rental assistance and supported housing for persons who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness with a recent history of incarceration residing in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties
  • Short-term rental assistance for individuals living in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando who have HIV/AIDS and are at risk of becoming homeless to prevent eviction, foreclosure or homelessness.
Finding housing, getting housing and keeping housing is not easy for someone with low income who has a serious medical condition and it is even tougher if the persons has a recent history of criminal behavior. Two housing specialists work with persons who are eligible assisting them in locating housing of their choice, providing financial assistance while the person becomes more stable and sufficient, coordinating with the individual's case manager to ensure access other community services that may be needed. Housing specialists often have several contacts a week with those being served to ensure their successful integration in the community. Short-term assistance is for those individuals who do not require on-going support from the housing specialist.
